Book Ends

Lawd knows that it's hard to recover from a trilogy like Fifty Shades of Grey (review here), but I've finally managed to regroup myself and have read some really great books recently.

Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire and Love Unscripted by Tina Reber. If you're like me and still couldn't get enough of the Christian/Anastasia love games, these two books are natural follow ups.  They are quick reads and both have the typical love story formula: bad boy meets good girl, they fall in love, something dramatic happens...you know the rest.

Once We Were Brothers by Ronald Balson.  Mel has been raving about this book for some time and she was spot on.  The book opens in present day Chicago as Ben Solomon aims a gun in the face of Eliot Rosenzweig, a prominent figure in the Jewish community, condemning him as being a Nazi officer. The story covers the events of the war that led to the accusation, told from Ben's point of view, as well as the present day lives of the two leads and Ben's feisty attorney Catherine Lockhart, who has had her own heartache.  I loved the book both due to Ben's story and also for the author's depiction of Catherine's internal struggle with corporate work versus legal work that actually stands for something. Having read many books about the Holocaust in the past, this book takes you on a completely unique emotional journey.  There are numerous themes that carry into all aspects of the story: family, love, loyalty, hope, despair, justice, etc.  A phenomenal read.

Flat-Out Love by Jessica Park.  After finishing the last book, I needed something lighter.  This book was a perfect balance of being fun yet deep.  The heroine in the book is Julie who finds herself apartment-less and lost in Boston her first year of college.  She's quickly taken in by her mother's friend, Erin Watkins, and her dysfunctional family.  The book leaves you guessing as to what happened in their lives that results in their thirteen year old daughter walking around with a life size cut out of her eldest brother.  It's Lars and the Real Girl meets Flat Stanley.  It was well-written, entertaining, and there's a small trace of that love story formula I just can't get enough of :)

Rules of Civility by Amor Towles.  I'll save most of my thoughts on this one since we're reading it for book club.  It may have been tough to get through at times, but it's one of those books that continues to make you think after the fact.  As a girl living in Manhattan, I of course loved the relate-able aspect of it, granted it was set seventy years before I inhabited this great island.  The best way I can describe it is a modern day author's Great Gatsby.

What I'm reading now: The World to Come by Dara Horn

Grab a book, cuddle up in a blanket at the park (and if you are somewhere where you don't need a blanket, you're a lucky duck), and have a great weekend!

We Built This City on Rock and Roll

Last night some of my co-workers and I headed over to Time Square to check out Rock of Ages at the Helen Hayes Theatre.  The musical was entertaining for a crowd of any age, with hits from Journey, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Bon Jovi, and pretty much any other rock n' roll artist you can think of.  I only checked my watch once and didn't fall asleep at all.  For those who don't know me well, that's a major triumph.  Also, who doesn't love a show where the narrator leads the audience in a good old fashion slow clap.  The show had all the elements of a good time - laughs (Franc), love story (Penn Badgley-look-a-like-Drew and Sharee), and incredibly awkward sexual innuendos increased by the fact your boss is sitting two seats down.

The Rock of Ages motion picture is coming out this summer, and I'm somewhat torn on whether to go see it.  Remakes can teeter on successful or disastrous, but with Adam Shankman behind the film as choreographer, this one may pull through. It features some of my favorites, Bryan Cranston, Malin Akerman, Alec Baldwin and Catherine Zeta-Jones, but it also stars Tom Cruise, who is one my least of favorites these days.  I've never really gotten over the couch jumping and "glib" incident. Then again, "Every Rose Has It's Thorn".

Bridal Shower Beauty

A few weeks ago we made the road trip down to Washington, DC to celebrate the beautiful Mrs. JPP-to-be.  The bridal shower was fantastic - filled with good food, fun and fashion.  Sometimes it can be hard to find the perfect shower ensemble.  Whether you are the bride looking for a pop of color to compliment your white frock, or a guest sporting spring hues with the quintessential nude heel, these looks will surely shine while sipping on tea or mimosas.

Regular blogging will commence tomorrow.  In the meantime, here are my jams this week.  The inspiration has been drawn from the passing of Levon Helm.  Thus, all songs are in some way tied to the word "Band" (since he was part of The Band, get it?).  Enjoy and Happy Tuesday!

2) You Lie by The BAND Perry

3) Rock and Roll BAND by Boston

4) Ants Marching by Dave Matthews BAND

5) What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction (Ultimate boy BAND)

Tuesday Tunes

This week's inspiration for Tuesday Tunes comes from the recent discovery that, after much speculation over the last 15 years, Tupac is still alive! Don't alert your local media just yet, he was brought back to life only as a hologram this weekend at Coachella to perform with headliners Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog.  Its one of the craziest things I've seen in awhile and has been added to my list of why modern technology is creepy, joining the ranks of Friend Finder and AdWorks.  Here are some other throwback tunes that have resurfaced recently:

1) Tupac Hologram Performance at Coachella 2012

2) Hold On by Wilson Phillips (featured in Bridesmaids)

3) Step by Step by Whitney Houston (for obvious reasons)

4) Let's Hear it for the Boy by Deniece Williams (featured in Footloose remake)

5) My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion (Leo in 3D, yes please)

Bonus Tracks:  My jaw dropped at a recent commercial I saw for Now That's What I Call Music #41.  I remember bopping to the first one with Meryl and Drew all through middle school.  The next two tracks are a tribute to NOW #1 and NOW #5, which I played on repeat for all of 2000. I apologize in advance for the last one, my music taste wasn't quite as sophisticated as it is now but the video is hysterical.  I was  tempted to post Barbie Girl by Aqua for Bonus Track #1 but I figured one annoying song was sufficient enough.  You're welcome.

1) Together Again by Janet Jackson

2) Aaron's House (Come Get It) by Aaron Carter

Yerba is Buena

Last night I went to dinner at Yerba Buena on Perry Street with some of my faves.  The restaurant offered a special Passover-friendly menu for those of us steering clear of chametz.  The last time I went here was for Hannukah, so it seemed only fitting to continue the tradition.  Yerba is well known for having fantastic cocktails, and the highlight was, surprisingly, the passover friendly Sabra Margarita.  Of course you can't go to the restaurant without getting the guacamole, this time around it was served with matzo.  We all shared some delicious side veggies and their signature salad.  I love the atmosphere of the restaurant, the Latin American and Spanish influence of the food, and of course the company.  If I had to flee Egypt I would bring with me my friends, Google Glasses, and the Peruvian corn.

Nom Nom Nom
Even though there is only two more days left of Pesach, it's better late than never to get your Kosher for Passover fixins'.  Here are other restaurants around the city offering Passover menus:
Abigael's on Broadway
Colbeh
Joe Doe
Telepan
Toloache

Now it's off to Washington DC to celebrate the future JPP!!  See ya'll next week xo

Kid-ding Around

As many of our parents and friends who are teachers can probably attest to, kids can surprise us everyday with what they say and do.  This morning I heard two heartwarming stories of kids doing just that.  With all the negative stories on the news, its refreshing to see good things from good people, especially when none of them are even old enough to drive.

In California, a 9-year-old named Caine Monry created a cardboard arcade at his father's garage.  As luck would have it, a patron walked in to the store to get a door handle and walked out inspired by this young kid.  He decided to put together a flash mob of people for a day of fun at Caine's Arcade, and documented the story.  Check out the video below for a mid-week feel good.

Just north of where little Caine was hiding behind a box and spitting out arcade tickets, two teenagers in Washington had obviously been brushing up on their Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock films, because it was a scene from Speed on Monday when their bus driver had a heart attack, and they saved a bus of fellow classmates.  One took over driving, and the other performed CPR.  Unfortunately, Alan Ruck was not on the bus with them to offer some comic relief.  Check out their interview on The Today Show this morning:

Lets just say, if the youth of America is shaping up to be like any one of these three local heroes, I'd say we are on the right path.

Happy Thursday Kiddos!

Sebastian, Swedes and Sweating

In the last year or so I've become obsessed with the Electronic Dance Music ("EDM") world.  It was a sign of the year to come after ringing in NYE with Avicii in January.  The lights, the music, the dancing, the people watching, nothing can compare.  To celebrate the second night of passover, Shay, Joanna, her boyfriend Chris and I put on our best and brightest to fist pumping the night away with half of Jersey at Sebastian Ingrosso at Roseland Ballroom.  The show was absolutely incredible to say the least.  Ingrosso is part of Swedish House Mafia, who is a staple in the electronic community, and were the first EDM performers to play for a sold out show at Madison Square Gardens this past winter.  Ingrosso broke out from the group to do solo sets Friday and Saturday at Roseland.  He showed that he could succeed on his own, as the set was hit after hit.  Highlights of the night: thousands of calories burned after jumping up and down for hours and being hit on by 19 year olds; downfall: over twenty-four hours later the ears are still ringing, only solution I found was to listen to the set again on YouTube!  Here's a small peak at our experience:

A Very Pemstein Passover

Chag Sameach everyone! I hope you all had yummy passover seders blessed with all sorts of bitter herbs, finding the afikomen and manichevitz.  Passover is one of my favorite holidays.  What with it being a mitzvah to have at least four glasses of wine and having an excuse to eat matzo for eight days, who wouldn't love it?
Chocolate Covered Matzah
It's always great to celebrate holidays with friends, a.k.a my NY family, when I can't be home in Atlanta with the Haynes clan.  I attended, for the second year, passover seder at the Pemstein's.  Like all great Pemstein events, it did not disappoint with the highlights being a flawless service led by Rabbi Pema, the gifted culinary skills of Yessica, and a female dominated Cranium match up.
Homemade Macaroons

For the occasion I brought a salad, pomegranate infused carrots (a DeeDee Lynn special), chocolate covered matzah and homemade macaroons.  Check out the links for recipes!  The highlight of the meal  for me was Jess' spinach casserole.  It was a different take on the spinach entree that would make Popeye proud.  Here's the recipe:

Ingredients:
3 packages of chopped spinach - defrosted and drained
2 eggs beaten
2 cups cottage cheese
1/2 cup matzah meal
1 cup Parmesan cheese
1 onion finely chopped
1/2 cup of greek yogurt
Directions:
Mix all together and turn into casserole dish.  Bake 1 hour and 30 mins at 350 degrees.  Add melted margarine/butter to top when reheating.  Add salt and pepper for taste.

Hope the next seven days fly by for everyone if you are keeping passover!  Don't forget to fill up on fruit for some extra fiber to keep things in motion ;)

A Moon for the Misbegotten

Last night I went with a friend to see the production of A Moon for the Misbegotten put on by The Pearl Theatre Company.  I'm not what one would consider a "theatre buff" but I do enjoy a good show, especially an off-broadway independent production.  These shows often have a minimal budget and an intimate setting which allows the actors to really shine. Misbegotten did just that.

A revival of the 1943 Eugen O'Neill play, the production has been getting rave reviews around NYC.  It's a story of feisty Irish Josie (Kim Martin-Cotten) and her scheming farmer father, Phil Hogan (Dan Daily), who is trying to trick their drunk landlord James Tyrone Jr. (Andrew May), loosely based on the playwright's brother, into marrying his daughter.  After you finally get accustomed to the strong Irish accents, I found myself laughing throughout the first two acts of the play, and, unfortunately, dozing off in the last three that focused more on the inner demons of Tyrone and Josie.  To the plays credit, however, it did clock in at 2 hours and 50 minutes, and I also fall asleep in everything.

Though I think all three of the main characters did a good job in their performances, Daily's portrayal of Phil was my favorite of the night as it was the most natural.  Martin's acting was way too dramatic for my taste and I didn't see the chemistry between her and May.  All in all, I think it was extremely well done and now I'm itching to see the prequel to the three part story, Long Day's Journey Into Night, subject to a dose of caffeine beforehand.

Mad Men Inspired

I'm finally caught up on the Mad Men series! I'd love for Don Draper to fall in love with me so I can become the actual Meghan Draper.  The TV version has a worse voice, terrible teeth and spells our name wrong, so I think I have a good chance.  In order to really make him swoon though, I have to dress the part.  I love the 50s & 60s costume design on the show and, like many great fashion trends, I'm sure it's bound to make a comeback. Here are some ideas for when it does:

Stars and Stripes

There are stories circulating that Star Jones is extremely upset by Sarah Palin's guest hosting duties on The Today Show yesterday.  I noticed something was going on because throughout the entire segment Star barely spoke, which is not like her and I don't blame her for the hostility.  I find Sarah Palin to be extremely irritating and cringed every time she said "lamestream media", disrespecting the very show that she was appearing on.  I can't wait to hopefully catch "Game Change" OnDemand this weekend, based on the lovely LW's recommendation, and conjure up even more reasons to dislike the Alaskan governor.  Check out the sour look on Star's face below.

Tuesday Tunes

It's actually Wednesday but I forgot to post my new jams yesterday! Without further ado...

1) All You Need is Love @ Ultra Music Festival 2012 by Avicii (a.k.a. my #1 man)

2) Take You Higher (Club Mix) by Goodwill & Hook N Sling

3) I Follow Rivers (The Magician Remix) by Lykke Li

4) Some Nights by FUN.

And in honor of seeing the Hunger Games last week...

Veggie Restaurant Review

Being a vegetarian can be limiting here in NYC, pretty much in any city really, but I try to be flexible by finding something in any restaurant that my friends and I venture to.  However, my inner food lover jumps for joy when I find a restaurant that has more than three or four options, usually only consisting of salad or pasta.  Here's a review of my three favorite vegetarian restaurants in the city.

Last week I went to dinner with LW and Shay at what has quickly become one of my favorites, Gobo (West Village Location: 401 Avenue of the Americas; Upper East Side Location: 1426 Third Avenue).  This was the fourth time I've been to the restaurant, and it has yet to disappoint.  Gobo has a sweet and sour "protein" that brings me back to my favorite vegetarian Chinese restaurant in Atlanta that me and Vlad frequented every summer in college. Each entree I try is better than the next.  The restaurant promises a zen experience, focusing on all the five senses in their preparations, and that it is.  I always leave with a satisfied pallet and all. Star dishes:  Sweet & Sour Protein, Mini Veggie Burger Slides (with a magic sauce), Grilled Oyster Mushrooms & Asparagus

It's been a few years since I visited Dirt Candy (430 E. 9th Street), one of the more well known upscale vegetarian restaurants located in the East Village, but I dream about it often.  Executive Chef and Owner, Amanda Cohen, opened up her first restaurant back in 2008 with a stellar resume that included Pure Food & Wine, Teany, and Heirloom.  We went a few months after it opened and diners now have to jump on reservations a month before planning to go.  It's a fairly small restaurant, which can make it some what awkward when you can't help but eavesdrop on the couple on their first date beside you, but worth the work it takes to get in. They have certainly left the vegetables up to the professionals.  Star dishes:  Jalapeno Hush Puppies with Maple Butter Sauce, Coconut Poached Tofu

Located a hop, skip and a jump from my apartment, Pure Food & Wine (54 Irving Place) offers so many different, delicious choices that even meat eaters find themselves flocking to the restaurant.  The ambiance in the restaurant is serene with a garden in the back, the food is flavorful and artistically presented, and the wine is plentiful.  Though some diners squander at the prices,  the quality of the food and the experience is worth every penny.  Star dishes: Zucchini Tomato Lasagna, Sweet Corn and Cashew Tamales, Natsu Maki

Honorable mentions:
Angelica Kitchen (300 East 13th Street, at 2nd Avenue)
Dang Lai Palace (180 3rd. Avenue, between 16th & 17th Street)
Gust Organics (519 Avenue of the Americas, at 14th Street)
Quantum Leap (West Village location: 226 Thompson Street; East Village location: 203 1st Avenue between 12th & 13th Street)
Tamarind  (Flat Iron location: 41-43 East 22nd Street; Tribeca location: 99 Hudson Street)
